Lenny Kosovo: On Jon the budgeteer

I met Jon in the 1980s when we worked together in the Manufacturing Center IE Dept. The IE group was a fairly tight bunch of about 8 people. We were all good friends. Jon was easy to like.

Jon the Budgeteer.
Qualities I remember about Jon from those days:

  • Sense of humor. Jon had a great ad lib sense of humor and he could always be relied on to share good Far Side cartoons.
  • His loyalty. You could always count on him.
  • His intellect. All of us in the IE group liked to think of ourselves as being on the cutting edge of computer technology as we were learning to do things on the early desktop computers. Jon led the way learning how to effectively put things like budgets on Lotus spreadsheets. And he led the way in sharing his knowledge with others.

By the late 90s our careers had gone separate ways. Jon and Lisa got married and moved into our neighborhood and started their family. Peggy and I would see Jon with his growing family once or twice a year at the Creekwood swimming pool. It was clear that Jon was devoted to his family. Jon became the head of the neighborhood association. I admired him for this.

By the late 90s our careers began to merge again. Jon was by then in charge of planning the production of cigarettes and PreCon where I worked was using more and more of those cigarettes for promotions. We faced many complicated problems together. Jon was always positive in his approach and his creative and analytical abilities helped more than once to make what appeared to be an impossible task a success. It was clear that Jon loved his work. As Jon and I worked more closely together — most recently as part of the same department, our close friendship was renewed. Jon was the same person he was when we were close in the 80s. The big differences were his devotion to his family and that he shared good Dilbert cartoons instead of Far Side.
